The issue of registration  has now become reality. From the end of July this year 2008 dental surgeries must only be employing a nurse who is registered with the General Dental Council. Considering just how many dental practices there are in the U.K. and how many nurses there are it is doubtful if all surgeries will be able to legally comply with this new legislation. Given that not all areas of the U.K. have access to training how this will be achieved has yet to be seen.

The one alternative is distance learning courses. These are available but to succeed they need the back-up of a college or a training facility for the practical training and examinations. Some courses offer tutors that will visit the surgery to offer guidance. We have a link to “Learn Kit” who can offer such assistance.

However training is to be undertaken, it is doubtful if this can be achieved by the deadline date. True all dentists have been aware of the issue but consideration has to be given for the high turnover of staff in the profession.

Finance of training is another topic. Who pays for the training? If participating surgeries send their nurses for training who pays? And more to the point who pays if the nurse decides to leave the job?

I have sympathy for both sides – how many surgeries will be operating in compliance with GDC guidelines after July this year?

Surgery Printing Service

We are pleased to announce another service to Dental Surgeries. Molaris has joined with the ACT Group to provide a fully comprehensive printing service. What is different? ACT is a fully digitised service. This means that you can order stationary in smaller quantities and make any changes that have occurred since the last printing! The result is smaller quantities therefore saving office space, improved cash flow, overnight service, and include changes to text or artwork.

Additionally ACT provides a translation service. Therefore if your practice has a large ethnic group you can advise your details in that particular language.

Another service is web page design and if required, hosting. Many dental practices with a large private patient base advertise their surgery and speciality on the web. ACT can provide a full package that includes site optimisation. i.e. a top Google placing for your key words for example:- search "orthodontics Bristol" and your patient will land on page one of Google.

Training Aids
